The American Harpy Eagle of Venezuela
One of the largest, most powerful birds of prey, the American Harpy Eagle is found throughout Venezuela’s dense rainforests. Here it is seen carved from a 2016 2,000 Bolivar Fuerte banknote, with its belly reworked with pieces from around the world.
Nearly extirpated from much of Central America, destruction of natural habitats has caused it to vanish from many parts of its former range.
Conservation programs are actively led in Venezuela to protect them, as they’re sometimes referred to as a “god of the wind” by indigenous cultures.
