The Humpback Whale from Tonga
The archipelago of Tonga is one of the premier global destinations to see humpback whales as they migrate to warmer waters over the summer months. Carved from a Tonga 2 Pa’anga banknote, the belly of the humpback has been reworked with pieces from around the world.
Once dangerously close to extinction due to its targeting in the whaling industry, the humpbacks population has thankfully recovered in nearly every region.
These majestic mammoths of the sea still face man made threats from fishing gear entanglement, coastal habitat destruction, and ongoing climate change.
